As part of the international ArtTech Fusion 2024 (ATF24) series organized by the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), the keynote session titled “NFTs – Artistic Innovation or Just a New Hype” by Professor Álvaro Barbosa and Professor Daniel Farinha offered a profound exploration of NFTs—a technology currently stirring debates in the art world. Are NFTs truly a creative revolution opening new horizons for art, or are they merely a fleeting trend? The professors delivered a comprehensive and insightful analysis of this issue.
Opening Keynote of the ATF24 International Series
The keynote session “NFTs – Artistic Innovation or Just a New Hype” officially launched the ATF24 international series at UEH, gathering a broad audience of experts, scientists, businesses, artists, government officials, lecturers, and students from both domestic and international backgrounds.
The session featured Professor Álvaro Barbosa, Vice-Rector of the University of Saint Joseph (Macau), and Professor Daniel Farinha, Senior Lecturer at the same institution. Professor Álvaro Barbosa is an expert in Media Arts and Technology, while Professor Daniel Farinha specializes in Information Technology, with over a decade of experience in system administration, digital marketing, biotechnology, telecommunications, and education.
The Future of NFTs Depends on the Collaboration of Artists, Technologists, Investors, and Communities to Build a Healthy and Sustainable Ecosystem
In recent years, Non-fungible Tokens (NFTs) have become a phenomenon attracting significant attention in the art world. NFTs are digital assets built on blockchain technology, representing unique ownership rights to digital items. Unlike cryptocurrencies that are interchangeable, each NFT is unique and cannot be replaced by another. NFTs can represent various assets, from digital art, music, videos, to virtual items in games.
NFTs have initiated a revolution in the art industry, creating a liberated creative space for artists by removing traditional barriers, allowing creators to connect directly with audiences and freely express themselves through their works. Many digital artworks have been sold for millions of dollars as NFTs, prompting questions about whether NFTs are truly a breakthrough for art or just a passing craze.
Professors Barbosa and Farinha deeply analyzed NFTs and argued that NFTs offer artists opportunities to sell and own digital artworks authentically through blockchain technology, addressing ownership and uniqueness issues in the digital age.
According to Professor Álvaro Barbosa, NFTs are ushering the art world into a new era. Historically, the value of art was tied to physical presence and uniqueness—each painting or sculpture existed as a singular original. However, the digital age has altered this paradigm. NFTs enable artists to create multiple digital versions of works, each still retaining uniqueness thanks to blockchain certification. This opens new avenues for creativity, storage, and art transactions in the digital era. Professor Barbosa highlighted the pivotal role of NFTs in shaping the future of digital art, marking a historical turning point and a new chapter in the history of human art.
NFTs also provide artists with newfound freedom and immense creative potential. Professor Farinha showcased various artists’ experiments with NFTs, from impressive visual art utilizing striking digital effects to generative art created by complex algorithms, all reflecting creative visions surpassing traditional art boundaries. NFTs enable artists to transcend conventional mediums, exploring the vast possibilities of digital art.
In an inspiring presentation, Professor Farinha discussed NFTs’ strong growth in the art field, describing how NFTs not only offer a new platform for art exchange and preservation but also act as a powerful driver for creativity and innovation. He presented examples of bold and groundbreaking NFT artworks that would have been difficult to realize using traditional means.
Notably, Professor Farinha emphasized the vast potential of interactive artworks incorporating programming code, where audiences can directly interact with and influence the artwork. These are not merely static pieces but immersive experiences, opening new channels for interaction between artists and audiences. With NFTs, the boundary between artist and audience becomes blurred, creating a new creative space where art is no longer confined by traditional rules or mediums. Creativity is empowered by technology, unveiling doors never before opened in art history.
Moreover, NFTs are reshaping the art business model. Previously, artists relied heavily on studios and distributors to reach markets. Now, with NFTs, artists can directly connect with fans and sell works through digital marketplaces, reclaiming control over their creations and enhancing income potential, thus fostering a circular economy within the artist community.
However, the rapid rise of NFTs also raises concerns. According to Gartner’s “Hype Cycle” model, questions emerge whether NFTs are currently at the peak of inflated expectations and may soon enter a phase of skepticism.
Issues around copyright, unauthorized reproductions, and the actual artistic quality of NFTs are also pressing concerns. Furthermore, the environmental impact of minting and transacting NFTs cannot be ignored. Platforms like Hic Et Nunc and Teia are striving to build more environmentally friendly NFT ecosystems by using low-energy blockchains such as Tezos and Ethereum Layer 2, significantly reducing carbon emissions associated with NFT mining and transactions.
Another critical aspect of NFTs is their ability to document the evolution of interactive artworks on the web via blockchain, creating a transparent, immutable history of origin, ownership, and modifications. Professor Farinha introduced the ARKIVO.ART research project, which supports preserving interactive NFT works against technological obsolescence by creating a virtual environment that archives the entire artwork.
NFTs are opening a promising new chapter for art. We are witnessing the convergence of art, technology, and economics in the digital era. Despite numerous challenges ahead, the creative and innovative potential of NFTs is undeniable. The future of NFTs will depend on the collaboration of artists, technologists, investors, and communities to build a healthy, sustainable ecosystem.
It can be said that NFTs are not merely a new technological trend but hold the potential to be a revolutionary force for the art world. With continuous innovation and community collaboration, NFTs promise to open an unprecedentedly creative chapter for art in the digital age.
