As part of the academic program at Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, students of the Interactive Entertainment Design Course have embarked on a dynamic learning journey—where art, technology, and storytelling converge.

From the very first sessions, students were immersed in hands-on experiences with TouchDesigner, an advanced visual programming platform widely used in interactive installations, digital performance, and live entertainment design. By working directly with elements such as lighting, visuals, motion, and sensor-based interactivity, learners not only grasped key technical concepts but also developed creative thinking aligned with real-world applications.

Collaborative Projects – The Core of the Learning Process

One of the most essential components of the course is collaborative project work. Beyond basic task division, group work became a space for co-creation—where students brainstorm, iterate, problem-solve, and bring their ideas to life as a collective. These collaborative efforts sharpened their ability to manage creative workflows, navigate challenges under tight deadlines, and develop a professional mindset toward teamwork—skills that are vital in today’s creative industries.

Professional Training with Industry Experts

A highlight of the program is the opportunity to learn directly from experienced professionals and industry experts. The curriculum is designed to cover the entire creative process—from conceptual development and scripting to technical execution. This balanced approach between theory and practice enabled students to gain a deeper understanding not just of “what” to create, but “how” and “why” creative technologies function in contemporary entertainment design.

Cultural Exploration – A Rich Source of Inspiration

Outside the classroom, students also engaged in cultural exploration across the historic city of Xi’an. Visits to ancient landmarks, encounters with local street food, and strolls through traditional neighborhoods offered more than just relaxation—they became sources of artistic inspiration, helping to shape students’ creative perspectives.

A major cultural and artistic highlight was the immersive experience of attending the renowned “The Song of Everlasting Sorrow” (长恨歌) show. This grand outdoor performance seamlessly blends traditional storytelling with modern technology—including projection mapping, lighting design, sound, and scenic interaction—to bring to life a classic tale from Chinese history. For the students, it provided a powerful example of how ArtTech (Art + Technology) can be applied in the creation of emotionally engaging, interactive entertainment content.

Academic and Personal Development Outcomes

Through this integrated experience of study, practice, and exploration, the course provided students with a comprehensive platform to:

– Develop specialized skills in interactive design using cutting-edge tools

– Strengthen collaborative and problem-solving abilities in real project environments

– Gain practical insights into the application of technology in art and entertainment

– Enrich creative thinking through exposure to cultural, historical, and artistic heritage
